HERE’S TO A HAPPY, AND HEALTHY, PINK OCTOBER
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. It’s been dubbed “Pink October”, and people across the globe wear the pink ribbon to show their support. For some, it is something only considered in passing – but to those who suffer from breast cancer or know someone who has been diagnosed, it goes much deeper than mere acknowledgement. It is heart-wrenching and emotionally exhausting. The physical effects are often devastating.
In 2017, just three weeks after Breast Cancer Awareness month came to an end, Keedo’s Founder, Nelia, was diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer and faced a double mastectomy. There certainly were tears, but Nelia faced her diagnosis with courage, asking how she could transform this package given to her into a gift that would benefit others. As a result Project, Mmangaliso was born. Headed by Dr Jenny Edge, and with Keedo’s full support, this project will facilitate the screening of many women by the end of 2018; including the valued Keedo staff.
At Keedo we care about the children of the world and the environment they grow up in. We aim to educate children about nature through our whimsical prints and educational swing tags. By doing this we hope that they will learn to appreciate and love Mother Nature.
We engage in environmentally sustainable practices and strive to raise awareness to make certain that we keep Mother Earth healthy for our kids. We have two projects, which are close to our heart, namely the Little Miracle Feeding Scheme and the Rhino Project which we support.
In partnership with media personality, author of modernmommy.co.za blog and entrepreneur, Jo-Ann Strauss and STOP Hunger Now SA, Keedo has entered the battleground and vowed to fight for the many underprivileged and starving children of South Africa.
Founder of Keedo, Nelia Annandale met Strauss on the set of Pasella many years ago and the two instantly formed a bond. After giving birth to her first child, Jo-ann contacted Nelia to celebrate the birth of her little miracle. She wanted to give back and involve herself in a cause that she is passionate about.
Through this collaboration, Keedo launched the ‘Little Miracle’ zippy grow range. With each zippy grow sold, Keedo are able to provide a warm meal for six disadvantaged children in South Africa. The zippy grows are available at Keedo stores nationwide and online at www.keedo.co.za
The range, endorsed by Strauss, will support the company’s ongoing Keedo Cares campaign. “Having my own little miracle has inspired me to take action for a cause that is very close to my heart,” says Strauss. “I couldn’t imagine my own child going hungry, so why is it ok for any other child to have to endure that?”
The zippy grows are manufactured in colours suitable for boys, girls and unisex, ranging in size from newborn to nine months old. An innovative design allows the baby grow to zip open completely at the front, making feeding and changing much easier for busy, modern-day, multi-tasking moms. The idea to incorporate a zip into the design of the baby grows was born in the early hours of the morning, when Strauss was struggling to change her baby boy in the dark. In a contemporary design twist the ‘Little Miracle’ grows feature a slightly dropped crotch, giving a cute, fashionable effect.
“As we celebrate our 24th year in business and consider all of the wonderful blessings we have received, we feel truly honoured to be able to give back to the communities that we serve,” says Annandale and as Margaret Mead said, ‘Never doubt a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has’.”
The tragic plight of South Africa’s beautiful rhinos is something that Keedo feels very passionate about. To this end, Keedo has teamed up with an organisation called Forever Wild, a Rhino Protection Initiative that aims to maintain populations of free ranging rhino.
Each season Keedo creates at least one t-shirt with the image of a rhino on it together with an educational swing tag that encourages customers to take a stand against Rhino poaching. R10 is donated from the sale of each of these t-shirts to the Forever Wild programme.
The Forever Wild Rhino Protection Initiative is a Wilderness Foundation Advocacy and awareness programme that was launched in May 2011 in response to the rhino poaching crisis.
The initiative supports conservation agencies and organized private game reserves in protecting their rhino as part of a functioning natural ecosystem.
