When Mama Amelia Poswa took in a destitute child almost 40 years ago, she never imagined that her new adopted family would grow to what it is today. Staying true to its name, Sakhumzi, which means to ‘build a house’, Mama Amelia built not only a house but a home in her community. Today, Sakhumzi offers a loving home, education and a bright future to the 95 children (aged between 0-21) who live there. Sakhumzi also offers a daily crèche facility for an additional 150 children from the community. Keedo realized that Mama Amelia is definitely one of a kind with her heart as big as Africa. That is why they decided to focus their social responsibility efforts to assist this worthy cause. To kick start this effort, Keedo recently launched the ‘Keedo Cares’ t-shirt that is currently in all Keedo stores nationally. For every Keedo giraffe t-shirt sold, Keedo will donate R10 to Sakhumzi to assist Mama Amelia achieve her goal of creating a better future for all the children at Sakhumzi. “What makes me happy," says Mama Amelia, "is to see a safe, happy child. My calling is to look after children because that child is the future. At the time I never knew it would go on for so long. I started with just a few and in no time there were 15, 20….. I am proud to be mom to all of them and in the end no child leaves Sakhumzi until he or she can fend for themselves”.
